My Journey & Tips

My Journey:

Getting Ready for Hunting:

The first step that I had to take in order to start this journey was to get my hunting licences. After I accomplished this I took a few days to think about if I actually wanted to hunt because hunting is expensive, takes up a lot of time, and you are killing and then harvesting. I ended up deciding to go for it and try it out because I thought that it would be cool and very important to know how to provide for yourself and others as well as understand where meat comes from.

Archery:

I purchased my compound bow at a local archery store. I bought a cheaper bow which was the Diamond Archery Infinite Edge (this bow is awesome and I still use it to this day). At this store I also bought arrows, field tips, and broad heads.  When you are starting off hunting you don’t need the most expensive or best quality gear, it is better to start off on the cheaper side and work your way up. I practiced almost everyday with my bow and I got better pretty quick shooting from distances of 20 yards to then 30 yards all the way up to 50 yards. I was ready to go hunting.

My First Hunt:

I went on my first hunt with a close friend who happened to be my hunting mentor. This hunt was a youth hunt for feral sheep. We had purchased a ram tag the day before and were ready to go hunt the next morning. We got to the hunting check in at 5:30 am and left the hunting area with one ram at 5:00 pm. That one day of hunting got me hooked and was something that I never experienced before. Being alone in nature and not having a direct path that you have to follow was something completely new to me and something that I found exhilarating but oddly peaceful.

Firearms:

This part of my hunting journey started when I built a tree stand on my property for pig hunting. I started considering if I should get a bolt action rifle to use on the bigger pigs that come through. In the end I decided to get a Ruger Rancher chamber in 7.62x39mm. This is a great gun for hog hunting and can even be used on deer. ALong with the Ruger Rancher I got a vortex scope for the sight.

How It’s Going:

I have been on about 30 different hunts now and plan to keep on hunting for the rest of my life. Hunting is one of those activities that is completely different from anything else. You can only understand it if you have done it and it is something that you should do or at least experience once. Hunting is a unique way to observe and explore nature. It is also very important in knowing where your food comes from because nowadays most people don’t understand the work and time that it takes in order to provide food.
