My Journey & Tips
Here are some of the tips I have found throughout my hunting journey that I would like to share with you so you don’t have to find them yourself.
Hunting Tips:
1.) Don’t dry fire your compound bow. This is when you shoot the bow without an arrow in it. If you do this you will wreck your bow.
2.) Sighting in your bow can be very tricky, especially for beginners. You have to sight it horizontal, then vertically, and then the separate pins for different yardages. Here is a youtube video that really helps with the sighting in process.
Archery:
3.) Jerking the shot is when you move the bow while shooting and therefore move the arrow making your shot less accurate. When you are shooting your bow really focuses on keeping still the whole time even for a few seconds after you shoot. This will help you prevent jerking the shot.
4.) When you buy arrows remember what length they are because if you get arrows that are a different length that will affect your accuracy. I would also recommend going to an archery shop because they can actually fit your bow for the best sized arrows.
5.) When you are buying broadheads make sure they are the same grain as your field tips so they are still accurate. Additionally when I buy new broadheads I like to test one of them before hunting just to make sure that they are sighting in good and hit their mark.
1.) When selecting which gun you want to buy, consider which caliber it is chambered in. You should research online if the caliber the gun is chambered in is enough to kill the species that you are wanting to hunt. One simple Google search will give you the answer. Doing this makes you a more ethical hunter.
Firearms:
2.) When you are sighting in your rifle scope you should use full metal jacket rounds because they tend to be cheaper than hunting rounds despite having very similar performances. These tips will save you some money.
3.) When you are shooting make sure that you have a nice, slow, and controlled squeeze on the trigger. This will help prevent you from jerking the shot and makes you more accurate.
4.) When you are buying hunting rounds such as hollow point or soft point rounds make sure that their gain is almost if not the same as your full metal jacket rounds. This will provide you with the best and most consistent accuracy.
5.) Sighting in your rifle scope can be difficult for beginners. Some things that you should do when sighting in your rifle scope is shooting three shot groups and understanding bullet drop. The three shots groups help show the average point of impact. Bullet drop is how much the bullet drops over the distance it travels. You will not be shooting accurately.
1.) When you are stalking animals a good tip is to make sure the wind is blowing in your face. This way the animals are less likely to smell you.
Hunting:
2.) There is scentless deodorant made for hunting which is actually really helpful when the wind is weird and the animals have a higher chance of smelling you.
3.) Choose your camo in relation to where you are hunting and what season you are hunting in. You want to blend in, not stand out.
4.) When you go hunting, especially in larger hunting areas, you should always have a plan on what you are going to do. This is mainly about what part of the area you want to hunt, where you might be able to get a good vantage point, and where you think the animals might be.
1.) Take your time if you need it. The information that you will learn during this course will be important and very relevant to your hunting journey. Not only does this information that you learn help yourself but it also makes you an ethical and safe hunter.
Hunting License:
2.) The hunting license course is split into a study guide, the actual timed course, and then the graduation test. When I did my course I spent a lot of time on the study guide just to find the same information on the actual timed course. So if you are going to spend time studying I would recommend just doing it on the actual course to save yourself some time.
3.) The hunting license course at first looks hard but it is actually very interesting and you learn a lot of things that you never knew before and people usually do much better than they think.
